Stallworth, who signed a 7 year, $35 million dollar contract with the Browns last summer, was able to benefit from the victim’s family wishing to put the matter behind them and receive closure from the whole ordeal. According to reports, Stallworth also came to terms with a financial settlement with the family, though the actual amount is unknown. After his release from jail, Stallworth will spend 8 years on probation and have 2 years of house arrest.

Stallworth, who had nowhere near the celebrity status of Michael Vick, killed a human being, and odds are, he will be catching touchdowns from Brady Quinn by Halloween. Maybe it’s me…but are lives of people valued less than animals in 2009?

I asked my younger cousin earlier today who were the Top 5 players in the NBA today. He was able to quickly reel off “Kobe, Lebron, Dwight Howard, CP3, Carmelo (Anthony)”. While some may change out one player here and there, his list was pretty solid. What do all of these players have in common? None of them played more than 2 years in college. In the case of Lebron, Kobe and Howard, they were straight to the pros guys. Melo was one-and-done, while CP3 needed an extra year of strength and conditioning at Wake Forest.

Nearly a year ago, Brandon Jennings announced to the world that he was skipping college to play overseas. Jennings, along with Ricky Rubio, are expected to be Top 10 picks in the upcoming draft, yet both have been technically professionals already. College Basketball recruiting scandals are being uncovered at an alarming rate, and you have to wonder if players like Derrick Rose, O.J Mayo, or Jennings would have gone straight into the league if given that option.

NBA Commissioner David Stern has said on record repeatedly that the NBA age limit of 19 is a benefit to the league, however, it is really? You have college institutions being used for nothing more than an NBA development league, while college coaches take their best shot at making a Final Four with a pro talent for seven months. The school makes millions in TV revenue, none of which goes to the “student-athlete”, and the player spends his time at school using it as a constant platform to display his skills to potential employers (NBA teams).

The same league that says No to 17 and 18 year olds now would not think twice about not admitting the next Lebron James or Dwight Howard in the league, would they?

Derrick Rose has issued a statement regarding pictures of him flashing gang signs.

“Recently, a photo has been circulating on the Internet which appears to depict me flashing a gang sign. “This photo of me was taken at a party I attended in Memphis while I was in school there, and was meant as a joke … a bad one, I now admit. I want to emphatically state, now and forever, that Derrick Rose is anti-gang, anti-drug, and anti-violence. I am not, nor have I ever been, affiliated with any gang and I can’t speak loudly enough against gang violence, and the things that gangs represent.” (ESPN)

“In posing for this picture, I am guilty of being young, naive and of using extremely poor judgment. I sincerely apologize to all my fans for my mistake. I pride myself on being a good citizen, and role model, that young people can look up to and I want to urge all my young fans to stay away from gangs and gang-related activities.”

…He just got caught. Floyd, the now former USC men’s basketball coach, resigned yesterday amid allegations that he gave an associate close to O.J Mayo $1000.00 of his own money while he was playing his freshman year at USC. While the evidence all but confirms the allegations the college is facing, Floyd’s resignation was not really a surprise. Recruiting top flight talent in 2009 is a big league business, and unfortunately for Floyd, he just so happened to get caught.

Sports networks and journalists of papers will cry outrage and shock over the events, but if you really look at the entire O.J Mayo/USC marriage, did it really make sense? Mayo, who was a native of West Virginia, bypassed all other scholarship offers to go to a predominantly football school. A school that isn’t even the best program in their own city.

Floyd and the university both knew that Mayo would be a one and done player, but they took the gamble and, in the short term, it paid off. While the NCAA was already all over the USC football program over the Reggie Bush saga, this could be the straw that broke the Trojan’s back. Is it just a matter of time before we see Pete Caroll on a press conference?

The best fighter in the world today is training for his first fight in a year and a half, and even while some are ready to crown Manny Pacquiao as the pound for pound best, Mayweather isn’t saying a word. Truth is, there’s no reason too, yet. Floyd has four targets left on his hit list, and if he successfully defeats all four men over the next 2-3 years, he will be the greatest fighter of our lifetime.

That’s a bold statement, but its the truth. You may not like Floyd, but with victories over Pacquiao, Cotto, Juan Manuel Marquez, and Sugar Shane Mosley, there will not be one non-heavyweight that would boast a resume in the modern era of boxing. Beating those four men won’t be easy, and it’s no guarantee the fights will ever happen. If the posturing and B.S is put aside, and the camps are able to work out the money, I would personally pay to see any of those bouts, and that is what boxing may need to revive a sport that is quickly taking a back seat to MMA.

I admit I’m not the biggest tennis fan in the world. When I do take time to sit and watch it, I find it’s not as bad as I expect it to be. Serena Williams, the best womens’ player in the world, was upset in the quarterfinals of the French Open by Svetlana Kuznetsova (you can’t pronounce it, don’t even try) 7-6, 5-7, 7-5.

Williams told the media she blamed her loss on being nervous, and that she gave the match away. “It was like, ‘Here, do you want to go to the semis? Because I don’t.’ She was like, ‘OK.”‘

Hopefully Williams will be able to bounce back and have a better showing later this summer at Wimbledon and the U.S Open.
